The architect was Richard Meier, whose other works include the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California. Funded by the Indianapolis Lilly Endowment in 1976, with the help of the Krannert Charitable Trust, it opened on October 10, 1979. The Harmony Society, led by George Rapp, arrived in the United States in 1804 and settled in Pennsylvania before purchasing 20,000 acres on the Wabash River and moving to Indiana in 1814. It is named for the Greek Athenaion, a temple dedicated to Athena in ancient Greece. New Harmony is the site of not just one, but two early American utopian communities.
